Helping educators build LGBTQ-inclusive classrooms

Hope in a Box

We equip K-12 educators with LGBTQ-inclusive curricula, training, and mentorship. Together, we use literature to cultivate empathy and ensure every LGBTQ student feels safe, welcome, and included at school.

Hope in a Box is now a project of Advocates for Youth!

Advocates for Youth (Advocates) and Hope in a Box are proud to collaborate to continue building safer and more inclusive classrooms across the country.  Advocates for Youth is a national nonprofit that works alongside young people to fight for youth reproductive and sexual health and rights. We are deeply honored to take on this partnership and deeply committed to continuing Hope in a Box’s legacy of ensuring every student feels safe, welcome, and included at school, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. Learn more about Advocates for Youth.

Advocates for Youth has worked for decades to ensure that in classrooms across the country, LGBTQ+ youth are safe, welcomed, and celebrated for who they are - and that they find representation in classroom materials. We are honored to take over the project from its amazing founders to expand this work by making Hope in a Box’s curated book list, curriculum guides, and toolkits available to hundreds of additional school libraries and Language Arts classes.

Hope in a Box is literally saving lives. When young LGBTQ people see themselves reflected in school curricula, their well-being improves and rates of bullying drop. By providing these resources to schools with little access to them, Hope in a Box is making a life-saving difference for young people.

Our small rural district isn’t very diverse, and it’s been incredibly important for us to find creative ways to help students be open-minded and empathetic. I’m so grateful for the guidance and generosity of Hope In A Box because it sends our students such an important message: we recognize LGBTQ students and we appreciate them!
